‘US at loss over self-contradictions

|

Interview with Dr. E. Michael Jones, Editor of Culture Wars Magazine, US.

US President Barack Obama

The US response to the uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa has received widespread condemnations over America’s ‘hypocrisy’ in dealing with democratic movements.

Press TV has spoken with Dr. E. Michael Jones, editor of Culture Wars Magazine from the US, who explains why the Israeli lobby has largely forced the US to live with self-contradictions and the consequential high costs.

Press TV: How do you think the Persian Gulf Arab states and Saudi government are trying to influence events in Yemen?

Dr. Jones: They are trying to get a transition underway that will go as quickly as possible. The real danger is the potential for anarchy following from the revolution.

What I think we need to do is ensure there is an orderly transition that can be best ensured by a trial that is taken under the (international) rule of law.

Press TV: Pertaining to the involvement of the US, do you think there is a coordination in policies that are adopted by Saudi Arabia, the PGCC countries and Washington?

Dr. Jones: Yes I’m sure there is. But what you have to take into account is the self-contradictions in American foreign policy. The two pillars of American foreign policy are on the one hand – a belief in democracy; and on the other hand – support of Israel.

This leads to a contradiction that is not going to work in the Middle East. We have seen it in Palestine where the Palestinians were told they needed democratic elections, but as soon as they elected Hamas…well…they made the wrong choice.

So we (US) don’t believe in democracy and this type of hypocrisy is coming out across the Arab world and I think America is going to get caught up in its own self-contradictions and it won’t be able to exercise power in an effective manner because it can’t solve these self contradictions.

A coherent foreign policy would mean either breaking with one or the other. The political situation in America now is that the Israel lobby runs American foreign policy so they cannot break with that and hence cannot have a coherent foreign policy.

The people of the world have taken the democracy message of America and run with it and so America is now faced with a situation that is out of its control. They can’t control this many situations all at once.

Press TV: US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has warned that al-Qaeda could become a serious threat in Yemen if Saleh goes. Up until now the strongest political reaction has been for some kind of political solution for Saleh to go through the option of talks. And this is the opposite of how they (the US) reacted against Qaddafi for instance and that contrast is being mentioned and criticized.

How far do you think the US is willing to go to safeguard its policy or as some protesters have been saying in Bahrain and Yemen rather than thinking about and addressing the issue s of human rights and democracy; prioritizing the issues of regional policies?

Dr. Jones: I think that we are part of a world-wide counter-revolution against capitalism; that is, the failure of capitalism across the entire world. And this means the US is losing its strategic position as hegemon of the entire world.

Just yesterday, China announced that it was ending its ‘one child’ policy. This is a sign that US influence over China is waning as well. What America stands for – prosperity, capitalism, is supposed to deliver prosperity and now we are realizing that is not the case even in the US, not in Wisconsin, not in Egypt, and owing to that lack of power, people will rise up and instead of having a unified approach, American foreign policy is now going to have to stamp out fires her and stamp out fires and have one policy in Yemen and another policy in Libya and they’re going to get caught up in their own self-contradictions and it’s not going to work.

Press TV: Finally Dr. Jones – Do you think that the situation in Yemen is going to go forward in line with the basic demands of the people?

Dr. Jones: I don’t think the Yemenis will accept another American puppet; however, the danger is that if no clear leader emerges, anarchy will spread throughout the country and you’ll end up with a situation like Somalia. That’s’ the problem.

Selamat membaca!

Wassalâmu‘alaikum wa rahmatullâhi wa barakâtuh.
