A senior Iranian cleric highlights the Islamic nature of the revolutions in the Middle East, condemning the West’s “plots to manipulate” the uprisings in Muslim nations.
“People in Muslim countries have awakened and this awakening is Islamic [in nature] because its symbol is the Friday Prayers,” Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said on Friday, referring to the demonstrations held in Arab countries after the weekly prayers, IRIB reported.
“People in Muslim countries argue that they do not accept the repression and dictatorship of non-Islamic regimes and will not give in to the US,” he pointed put.
Tehran’s interim Friday Prayers leader noted the massive involvement of Muslim youths, rather than factions and politicians, in the uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East.
“Our question from the rulers of these countries is this: how is it possible to kill and repress people and the youth?” he said.
The cleric recalled the killing and torture of Iranian revolutionaries prior to the overthrow of the country’s monarchy and the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
“Your uprising might take hundreds of martyrs but beware that for establishing an Islamic government and freedom from colonialism and the US, a price must be paid,” Ayatollah Jannati addressed protesters in Muslim countries.
He further denounced the Saudi-led invasion of Bahrain by its Arab neighbors upon a request from Manama.
“The Saudis — who neither fired a single shot at the Zionist regime [of Israel's troops] during their evil acts, nor did they send a single soldier to stop this regime — now have come to Bahrain and Yemen to massacre people of these countries,” he said.
“There will come a day when the people in the region and even the people of Saudi Arabia strangle the oppressive regional rulers,” Ayatollah Jannati added.
