Inaction by the likes of the OIC and Arab League while Muslims are killed is all too familiar
Today’s desperate scenes in Syria are reminiscent: women and children fleeing fighting; villages deserted; and the men hunted down and killed. For those old enough to remember the Bosnian and Chechen wars there is an almost eerie similarity between watching Syrian women hiding in the hills and the images beamed across the media almost two decades ago. Maybe it is the haggard faces of the old women, or the fear of the children or simply that fear would look the same on any face.
As Bashar al-Assad makes his last tyrannical stand against his own people it is clear the Muslim world has much to learn when it comes to truly caring for their own people.
The ineptitude of the rulers towards the Muslims of Bosnia and Chechnya was one of the starkest betrayals of the 1990’s. As these same rulers find themselves facing the wrath of their people those with the power once again refuse to use it.
Turkey, which has a newly re-elected ‘Islamic’ government, has been busy clearing fields so it can erect more tents for the Syrians who wish to flee the fighting. Aiding the people who are lucky enough to get into Turkey is the least it can do to help the now petrified populace of towns such as Jisr al-Shughour. Yet with the example set by the likes of now dethroned Mubarak, who shut the border on desperate Palestinians when the Israelis bombed day and night, a few tents and some food and water is hailed as showing Islamic regional leadership. How low we have come since the days of true leaders (Caliphs) like Abu Bakar (r.a.) and Umar Ibn Khataab (r.a.)
It is amazing to think that the only thing that separates life and death for Syrians and Libyans are lines drawn in the sand by colonial masters decades ago. Borders which the Islamic texts clearly reject, and an outdated sense of nationalism that the Muslim Ummah gives little credence to.
Mohammad (saw) said:
“The Muslim ummah is an unique ummah among the whole of mankind: Their Land is One, their War is One, their Peace is One, their Honor is One and their Trust is One.” (Ahmad)
Despite all the military and political leverage at the hands of the Muslim world there are calls for a UN resolution on Syria. The UN path is one that Russia and China refuse to entertain knowing that it will only strengthen America’s hold on the region.
Protests in Damascus have seen the burning of Chinese and Russian flags due to their refusal to even discuss Syria at the UN. The frustrations of the protesters can be understood as they are looking for any kind of salvation from the barbarity being meted out by the regime. However what it really highlights is the complicity of the rest of the Muslim world to the atrocities of recent weeks.
As has been the case for years now the deaths of Muslims around the globe are met with signs of apathy and disinterest from the ruling elite of the Muslim lands. Just like the rites of passage practiced in many ancient cultures the Muslim world is today standing at a crossroads; it must seize the moment and learn to stand on it’s own two feet.
With millions on the streets all over the Middle East and massive displeasure at current governments in places like Pakistan, this is the Muslim world’s moment. To ensure that the anguish ridden faces of Muslim women is a figment of the past their must be a unified call for the implementation of the Khilafah. A state that wouldn’t just open the borders for refugees but would abolish the divisions that allow the massacre of innocents in full view of the world.
True leadership isn’t using Islam as a pre-text to get into power like Erdogan of Turkey but protecting the Ummah with all your might when it needs it most.
The Prophet Mohammad (saw) said:
“Only the Imam is a shield, behind whom you fight and you protect yourself with, so if he orders by taqwaand is just then he has reward for that, and if he orders by other than that then it is against himself.” (Muslim)
