BEIRUT: A controversial Islamist group dismissed Friday reports that the group’s support for popular protests in Syria was inspired by domestic or foreign parties.
“Our action has nothing to do with the agenda of any local or regional force,” Ahmad Qasas, Hizb Ut-Tahrir’s media official, told a news conference in Tripoli.
He said a pan-Islamist group such as Hizb Ut-Tahrir would not join forces with what it called small organizations with modest goals, “especially secular ones.” Hizb Ut-Tahrir staged a demonstration in Tripoli last month in support of protesters in Syria. Qasas also lashed out at Hezbollah leaders without naming them. “They justify their support for the repressive regime [which is] against the people of Syria by saying that it is a regime of defiance and resistance. Is this the newest resistance philosophy: ‘Give us humiliated and enslaved people and we will give you a successful resistance’?” Qasas asked.
