‘US attack on Libya, strategic failure'

A top Iranian military commander has warned the United States against adverse consequences of a possible attack on Libya, saying it would lead to a “strategic failure” for Washington.

“The US possible attack on Libya is a miscalculation and this mistake will cause a strategic mistake,” IRNA quoted Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi as speaking to reporters on Sunday.

“The US believes that it should launch an attack on Libya for the same reason it attacked Iraq and Afghanistan but this is a very false remark,” he noted.

The top Iranian commander noted that crisis-hit Libya is in a condition different from Iraq and Afghanistan and pointed out that in case of the US intervention in Libya, it will face Muslim people of the North African country.

“We believe that the US interference in Libya will present Washington’s real face to Muslim people in the region more than ever before,” Firouzabadi said.

He emphasized that the US intervention would promote anti-imperialist and independence of regional nations.

The remarks came after media reports suggest that the United States and its allies may be preparing the ground for a military intervention in Libya.

The US Senate has unanimously passed a resolution calling for a no-fly zone over Libya.

The US Senate Armed Services Committee said all options, including the military option, should be on the table.
